Octet Series
Each of the eight images in the individual photos was taken at the same time from the same angle using different settings to achieve different effects. Then I arranged the images in the octet. What interested me was the different feelings the same subject matter could evoke depending on the color, saturation, and overall appearance. I used Hipstamatic on the iPhone, an app that gives the photographer artistic control closer to a painting than a photograph. It gives the photographer the ability to control effects such as multiple exposures, the kind of light spots one would get by opening the back of the camera too soon, the burned, washed out feeling – all the things that used to happen when we were using cameras in the early days when disaster occurred if there was a piece of cellophane stuck on the lens, if we opened the back too soon, or forgot to wind the film.
Occasionally I mixed subject matter in the octet if it felt right.
